Incorporating Natural Assets into your AMP(AM 306.1 & 306.2)
As part of the ongoing Asset Management training series, the following outlines a NEW training session from the recently launched Asset Management Roadmap 3.0.
Series Overview
This 2-part training series will equip municipal staff with the knowledge and tools to incorporate natural assets into asset management planning in compliance with Ontario Regulation 588/17.
Drawing on AMONTario’s expertise and Nature is Infrastructure: How to Incorporate Natural Assets into Asset Management Plans, a guidebook developed by the Natural Assets Initiative with support from the Ontario Greenbelt Foundation and MFOA, these sessions will provide introductory guidance for identifying, inventorying, and managing natural assets. Participants will gain practical insights into integrating natural asset into existing asset management practices, covering state of infrastructure, levels of service, lifecycle, and risk management.
Webinar Part 1 (AM 306.1)
: How to Integrate Natural Assets into Asset Management Plans: The First Steps
(Tuesday, July 8 @ 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm)
Overview of definitions and the regulatory context under Ontario’s O.Reg. 588/17 related to green infrastructure and natural assets.
A practical approach for identifying natural assets within a municipality and linking them to service delivery.
Guidance on how to integrate natural assets into asset management plans, focusing on the first steps:
How to gather natural asset state of infrastructure information, including:
Hierarchy options and different approaches to service areas
Number and location information (high level overview of using existing provincial and federal data)
Valuation
Condition
What are useful LOS for natural assets
Explore examples of municipalities of various sizes and geographies that have successfully integrated natural assets into their asset management plans, highlighting different approaches, challenges, and lessons learned.
Strategies for using placeholders and structuring future commitments to natural assets within existing asset management plans.
Information on the role of Ontario’s Conservation Authorities in supporting municipalities with natural asset data, expertise, and collaborative management approaches.

How to Integrate Natural Assets Into AMPs: Focusing On The Lifecycle Management And Risk

Overview of lifecycle management for natural assets, outlining how natural assets require lifecycle activities to sustain service delivery over time.
Understand how to collect and structure lifecycle costing information for natural assets, using common asset types like forests, trees, and shorelines as practical examples.
Learn how natural assets both reduce risks to communities and face risks themselves.
Learn how to assess natural assets using asset management risk approaches, including incorporating climate risks like flooding, drought, and extreme heat.
Explore examples of municipalities in Ontario applying lifecycle and risk management practices to their natural assets within asset management processes.
Discuss how collaboration between asset managers, planners, and environmental professionals is essential for effective integration of natural assets into asset management.

Jennifer Court, Executive Director, Asset Management Ontario
Jennifer Court is the Executive Director of Asset Management Ontario, where she works to foster a centre of excellence and innovation for public sector asset management in the Province of Ontario. Jennifer is a demonstrated leader with over 20 years’ experience in various not-for-profit organizations, with a particular focus on green infrastructure. It was her work on green infrastructure asset management that first kindled her passion for asset management. Her approach to asset management prioritizes collaboration and supporting climate resilience.
Michelle Sawka, Senior Advisor, Green Infrastructure Asset Management
Michelle is an environmental scientist who specializes in integrating green infrastructure and natural assets into environmental policy and asset management planning processes. With over a decade of hands-on experience collaborating with municipal staff across Ontario, Michelle has helped advance the practice of green infrastructure and natural asset management to support more resilient communities. Her expertise includes developing asset inventories, conducting valuations and condition assessments, completing risk assessments, and defining levels of service and life cycle management strategies for a wide range of green infrastructure asset types.
